K-PARC Adoptive Parent Retreats

April 11, 2024 – Adopting a child is a life-changing decision that comes with its own unique set of challenges and joys. As an adoptive parent, you may have experienced firsthand the rollercoaster of emotions that comes with the adoption process. From the initial excitement of choosing to adopt, to the long and sometimes difficult wait, and finally finalizing the adoption, it can be an overwhelming and emotional journey.

It’s important to remember that the last stroke of the Judge’s pen finalizing the adoption does not end your adoptive child’s journey in processing their experiences with trauma and loss. It also begins your journey as an adoptive parent. As either a new or seasoned adoptive parent, be sure to take time for yourself and your family to process and adjust to each chapter adoption brings to your lives. This is where an adoptive parent retreat can be incredibly beneficial.

Retreats offered through the Kansas Post Adoption Resource Center (K-PARC) are specifically designed and curated for and by adoptive families. It provides a safe and supportive space for adoptive parents to come together and connect with others who understand the unique challenges and joys of adoption. Our two-day adoptive parent retreat is for families currently on their journey to adoption or families who have finalized their adoption. Our retreats are hosted throughout Kansas and are typically held four times per year.  Although children are not allowed at the retreat, a childcare stipend in the form of a check is available to help offset any costs endured by the adoptive family for childcare. There are resources we can connect adoptive families to that can help arrange respite as well.

Let’s take some time to identify the advantages from attending adoptive parent retreats.

1. A safe space to share experiences

One of the main benefits of attending an adoptive parent retreat is the opportunity to connect and build relationships with other adoptive parents. Often, adoptive parents may feel isolated or misunderstood by friends and family who have not gone through the adoption process. This can lead to feelings of loneliness and a lack of support. By attending a retreat, you will have the chance to meet and connect with others who have had similar experiences and can offer understanding and encouragement.

2. Learning from experts and experienced parents

Another benefit of an adoptive parent retreat is the opportunity for education and learning. Our retreats offer sessions focused on topics such as trauma informed care, core issues in adoption, the adoption constellation, and parenting techniques specifically tailored for adoptive families. These sessions can provide valuable information and tools to help navigate the unique challenges of adoption and strengthen the bond between you and your child.

3. Break from daily routine and self-care

As adoptive parents, it’s easy to get caught up in the daily demands of parenting and forget to take care of ourselves. Attending a retreat gives you the chance to step away from the daily routine and focus on your own well-being. Adoptive families are provided with accommodations where the retreat is held. This offers a chance for you to relax and recharge or maybe grab dinner with a newfound friend from the retreat. By taking time for yourself, you will come back to your family feeling rejuvenated and better equipped to handle the challenges of parenting.

4. A sense of community and belonging

Adoptive parent retreats also provide a sense of community and belonging. It’s common for adoptive families to feel like they are the only ones going through certain struggles or experiences. By attending a retreat, you will be surrounded by a community of people who understand and can relate to your journey. This can be incredibly comforting and empowering.

“The best part of the weekend was getting to meet with other foster & adoptive parents. It was wonderful and inspirational to share stories, ideas, concerns, dreams, and more. I hope you all realize how important and meaningful the work is that you do. You are helping to educate, support, and inspire so many. Thank you and God bless!”
